Day 24 (Rovinj, Croatia)

I blocked off most of the light entering the apartment so that we could sleep in this morning. We were awaken to the beast upstairs running around above us at 7:30 this morning. We were obviously lied to in the reviews about this place being quiet. I will say that it is a really nice place if it wasn’t under a zoo.

We have a laundry machine that is all symbols. I’m pretty good at pictures so how hard can it be? Of course the symbols on their website do not match the symbols on this washing machine. Why is that? We ended up washing our clothes about 3 times trying to get it right. At least we will be representing the US with the cleanest clothes over here. We also ran out of hot water so no showers, sorry Rovinj, maybe later.

Lori had a breakfast place all picked out for us but by the time we got done screwing with the washing machine it was 1pm, so lunch it is. Lori had Tuna steak encrusted with sesame seeds just like last night and I had the grilled Squid. They were both delicious! We walked around and shopped a little and also picked up some groceries for breakfast tomorrow morning.

We stopped at some cafe’s along the water and had some drinks before wandering deeper into Old Town. It is not a big place but there are so many alleys that you see something new every where you turn. We found another little grocery store that is really close to our apartment with a really good selection. I am not sure that we can find it again but it was at the beginning of our exploring so it must be close. We also found what seemed to be an Artist District. Lots of pottery, jewelry and trinkets. Then we stumbled upon a wine bar that offered wine tasting. I love a wine tasting! The entrance was very picturesque and the patrons were from the UK and were very nice. They explained the wines and even brought us some additional wines to taste that they really liked. Ehhh! they were just ok. Then I asked about the local wines. He said that there is a wine made from the Teran grape that is local. He brought it over and asked me to smell it while he waited. I was afraid to say as it smelled like manure and not just any manure. The newer manure! He kept asking me to just say what it smells like and I finally responded “manure”. He said “exactly”. It was an awful smell. This would explain all of the bad wine that I had been drinking since we got here. Because the local restaurants like serving local wine.

We headed back to the Champagne bar that is across from our apartment to watch the sunset. They remembered us from the night before and found us some really nice seats for the show. We watched the sunset below a line of clouds that lit up the sky a bright orange. We keep watching for the elusive Green Flash which occurs sometimes just as the sun disappears. There were boats out there, probably on sunset cruises and one timed itself perfectly to block our view of the final moment. If I only had a torpedo! We had a good laugh and will be back tomorrow night to watch again.

As it got dark the blue light turned on in the water to attract fish. I watched as some passed by. Then I started seeing what looked like distorted water around the light. It was jellyfish! Thousands of them. My plan was to go swimming here tomorrow to say that I swam in the Adriatic Sea. I asked the waiter if that was what I was seeing and he said yes. There are a lot of them this year. He also said that they are harmless and not the stinging kind. He assured me that they are safe and said if you get stung I will give you a free drink tomorrow. Hmm, am I that cheap to risk getting stung? We will see.

We called it a night at about 8:30pm. We ate some fresh bread and olive oil that we had purchased earlier. Delicious! We then went to bed to watch a little TV. Yup, the brat was at it again. This time he jumped up and down on the floor right above our bedroom. It started at about 9pm. At about 9:15pm, Lori said he can’t keep it up much longer. Well she underestimated him. He continued until 10pm!!! We had many conversations about how to handle this. We even considered that it might be on purpose to discourage renters. Whatever the reason, it was awful and had me thinking bad thoughts!! Finally, the brat quit and we were able to go to sleep. I hope his feet hurt in the morning!
