Today was a slow start. We wanted to rest today but it was raining so we opted to drive to Rovinj where the weather looked better. It is about 1.5 hrs drive but is on our list of places to visit. The town is a walking only town so you have to park your car. More walking, oh joy. There is plenty of parking so that is not an issue. Make sure you have a small car because parking is tight.
The town of Rovinj is a cobblestone, narrow street village that is very picturesque. The cobblestones are worn smooth and give off a shiny appearance. The town resembles Venice without the canals. The buildings are right on the edge of the sea with old chimneys and antennas topping the roofs. The buildings are stacked side by side and are painted several different colors. They are weathered from the salt air with paint peeling and steel bars and railings rusting. It adds to the charm of this place. I have included some pictures because descriptions do not do this city justice.
We walked around old town which is not very big. The town sits on a hill that is on a peninsula. At the top is another large church. Once you make it up the hilly, slick cobblestones you can see islands with yachts scattered around. The town itself feels like it is in a bay but the old town peninsula jets out into the sea. Old town has that Italian village feel and probably had some Roman influence. This is our kind of town! We walked around exploring the many alleys zig zagging through town. We found some back alley cafe’s which Lori loves to find. She is always looking for that black gold (coffee). The restaurants sit right on the Adriatic and offer many choices of seafood. I think that we found our happy place. Within a few hours we were reserving the next 4 days stay in this village which we plan to immerse ourselves in. Of course our luggage is 3 hours round trip drive from here but we don’t care. The green machine does not use that much gas and the drive is beautiful.
We made it back to our hotel base in Icici, had some pizza at the ball pit bar and called it a night. Tomorrow we have a 1.5 hr drive back to our happy place which we are really looking forward to. The first part of the drive is back up the mountain on all of those switchbacks that tend to be a little dizzying. It will be the 4th time that we have driven this rode so maybe it will not be that bad this time. It is really fun to drive but makes Lori nauseous.
